AU18 – AIX 5L System Administration III

Develop the skills to measure, analyze, and tune common performance issues on IBM pSeries systems running AIX 5L.

Learn about performance management concepts and techniques and the use of basic AIX tools to monitor, analyze, and tune an AIX 5L system. Monitoring and analyzing tools discussed in this course include vmstat, iostat, sar, tprof, svmon, filemon, netstat, and lvmstat. Tuning tools includes schedo, vmo, ioo, no, and nfso.

Also, learn how to use Performance Problem Reporting (PerfPMR) and its scripts to capture performance data to analyze later.

Students attending this course are expected to have basic AIX 5L and TCP/IP skills. These skills can be obtained by attending the following courses (or have the equivalent, extensive AIX 5L and TCP/IP skills):

  • AU16 AIX 5L System Administration II: Problem Determination
  • AU07 AIX 5L Configuring TCP/IP

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Define performance terminology
  • Describe the methodology for tuning a system
  • Identify the set of basic AIX tools to monitor, analyze, and tune a system
  • Use AIX tools to determine common bottlenecks in the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Virtual Memory Manager (VMM), Logical Volume Manager (LVM), internal disk – Input/Output (I/O), and network subsystems
  • Use AIX tools to demonstrate techniques to tune the subsystems
