SN83 – SVC – Planning and Implementation

Leverage networked storage connectivity by integrating a layer of intelligence – the SAN Volume Controller (SVC) – to facilitate storage application data access independence from storage management functions and requirements. Focus on planning and implementation tasks associated with integrating the SVC into the Storage Area Network (SAN). Centralize storage provisioning to host servers from common storage pools. Facilitate the coexistence and migration of data from non-virtualized to the virtualized environment. Utilize network-level storage subsystem independent data replication services to satisfy backup and disaster recovery requirements.

Note: The lecture content of this course is identical to that of SAN Volume Controller (SVC) – Planning and Implementation (SN82). This course provides hands-on exercises for those individuals who do not have ready access to an SVC cluster.

Introducing the SAN Volume Controller

  • Storage Provisioning with the SAN Volume Controller
  • SAN Volume Controller Clustering Environment
  • SAN Integration Server

SVC cluster setup and basic interfaces

  • SVC physical environment planning
  • storage subsystem Logical Unit Number (LUN) assignments
  • SVC cluster creation and basic interfaces (Command Line Interface (CLI) and Graphical User Interface (GUI))

SVC and SAN integration – zoning and SDD multipathing

  • SVC and fabric zoning
  • accessing SVC vDisks: host perspective
  • SDD path selection and management (including sddsrv)

Data migration

  • migrate existing data (image mode)
  • migrate from Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) to Fibre Array Storage Technology (FAStT) (migrate virtual disk (vDisk))
  • FAStT and SVC migration
  • forced removal of managed disk (mDisk) from one mDisk group to another

Data replication

  • flash copy and example scenarios
  • remote copy and example scenarios

Managing the SVC environment

  • software upgrades
  • additional management items
